Compare these parts of the city before choosing a base or planning an outing. They may be spread out, so check each area’s travel details.

• West Village and Greenwich Village →

  The birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement: the Stonewall National Monument, Stonewall Inn, and Julius’ Bar sit within two blocks of each other, alongside Cubbyhole, Henrietta Hudson, Pieces, Playhouse, Rockbar, and The Center. It is the easiest first stop for a traveler and the densest concentration of queer history in the city.

  Chelsea was the center of gay Manhattan nightlife through the 1990s and 2000s; Barracuda’s March 2025 closure ended its last long-running lounge. The Eagle’s leather scene on the far West Side and the newly reopened g Lounge on 19th Street are the current anchors.

• Hell's Kitchen →

  The 9th Avenue corridor between roughly 46th and 55th Streets is New York’s current main gay bar strip, anchored by Hardware, Industry, and Boxers HK. Therapy, Posh, and The Q all closed here in recent years, so check that any older recommendation is still open.

• Harlem →

  Harlem’s queer history runs back to the drag balls of the 1920s Harlem Renaissance. Alibi Lounge, a Black-owned LGBTQ+ cocktail lounge opened in 2016, is one current Harlem night out; Harlem Pride anchors the neighborhood’s public annual calendar.

• Williamsburg and Bushwick →

  North Brooklyn’s queer nightlife spans Metropolitan’s two-decade-old backyard bar in Williamsburg to 3 Dollar Bill’s large club and performance space and Hive Mind Books’ queer bookstore-cafe on the Bushwick side. Bushwig, the drag and performance festival, is hosted here.

• Park Slope →

  Park Slope has been one of Brooklyn’s best-known lesbian neighborhoods since the 1980s. Ginger’s Bar is the current anchor; Excelsior, a second longtime Fifth Avenue gay bar, closed in 2019.
